Sarah Kohout’s connection to the Franklin Park Ice Arena spans many years, from learning to skate at Ice Arena as a child to coaching and now serving as Skating School Director. After returning to the Park District of Franklin Park two years ago, she has stepped into her new role, bringing her skating and coaching experience to the programs she now oversees.

Sarah grew up skating at Franklin Park Ice Arena from the age of four through eighteen. After graduating high school, she attended the University of Minnesota, where she was a NCAA Division I hockey cheerleader. During her time at the university, she also helped establish the figure skating club, continuing to share her love for the sport.

Her experience on the ice eventually led her to coaching, which she began at just fifteen years old. Over the years, she coached at several different rinks before returning to the Franklin Park Ice Arena two years ago. Following the retirement of the longtime Skating School Director, Anne Raucci, in September, Sarah stepped into the Skating School Director role and has spent the past month settling into her new position. The transition has gone smoothly, thanks in large part to the support of Anne Raucci and Carla Deak, Ice Arena Manager.

Sarah has already had an exciting year on the ice. In July, she traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the Fusion Skating Club to participate in the ISI World Recreational Championships. The competition featured more than 600 competitors representing 42 rinks from 17 states and Hong Kong. Their hard work paid off when the team earned first place for its Night at the Museum routine.

Now, Sarah and her skaters are looking ahead to another cherished seasonal tradition: the Holiday Recital! Rehearsals begin this weekend, and excitement is building as skaters prepare to take the ice and share what they have been working on. The annual Holiday Recital gives skaters the opportunity to showcase their talents and spread holiday cheer through performances they have practiced and perfected throughout the season.

The Holiday Recital will take place at the Ice Arena on Saturday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m., with a second performance on Sunday, December 6, at 3 p.m. Anyone who purchases a ticket and attends the show is welcome to skate for free after the show on Saturday night. The annual event is a beloved holiday tradition that brings families, friends, and community members together to celebrate the season and cheer on skaters of all skill levels.

Sarah’s experience as a skater and coach has prepared her well for her new role as Skate School Director. With support from Anne and Carla, she has made a smooth transition and looks forward to continuing the Ice Arena’s skating programs and preparing for another successful Holiday Recital.

With the Holiday Recital just around the corner, the Ice Arena is ready to welcome the community for another season of festive performances and holiday magic on the ice.
